The Waterfront BIA is pleased to announce that together with ASTA [American Sail Training International] TALL SHIPS will once again be coming to Toronto, Canada Day weekend 2010.
As the focal point of the Festival, Toronto will host tall ships from around the world as the first major port in the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE®, a series of tall ship races coordinated by the American Sail Training Association (ASTA).
Over the course of the four-day Festival Toronto has the opportunity to welcome up to a million visitors to Toronto's Waterfront as we play host to these historic ships and their international crews.
Representing another exciting step in the evolution of the Festival,
Redpath Sugar comes aboard as title sponsor of the Redpath Waterfront Festival 2010.
"This festival is a tremendous opportunity to showcase one of the most important locations in the city - our Waterfront," says Jonathan Bamberger, President of Redpath Sugar. "For over 150 years, Redpath has been bringing sugar into Canada by ship. We are very proud to sponsor this celebration of Canada's history, Toronto's Waterfront and the glorious tall ships."
"The American Sail Training Association is excited that the great city of Toronto will be our first port in the Great Lakes system for the Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE," Says ASTA Executive Director, Bert Rogers. "Wherever they go, Tall Ships bring the excitement of their rich maritime histories to their host ports. In 2010, Torontonians will be able to tour the ships, meet crews from many nations, and experience first-hand the beauty of some of the most famous vessels in history."
In addition to supporting youth sail-training and historical preservation of tall ships, ASTA has partnered with Great Lakes United to generate awareness of the importance of water conservation.
"The Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE is probably the most sustainable race on the planet," said Derek Stack, executive director of Great Lakes United. "It's a fantastic way to build a new water consciousness in celebration of waters worth protecting. We are proud to be part of this effort and to be working with port festivals like Toronto's Redpath Waterfront Festival 2010 in promoting a conservation message."
Invited Tall Ships include:
BRIGG Roald Amudsen, Germany; BARK Europa, The Netherlands;
Freedom Schooner AMISTAD, U.S.A; Denis Sullivan, U.S.A; Pride of Baltimore II, U.S.A; Flagship Niagara, U.S.A …and others!
Also present at the festival will be Toronto's homeport vessels:
Empire Sandy, Pathfinder, Playfair, Challenge, and Kajama.
